About Mrs. Serrano
Hello! I am Mrs. Serrano. I was born in Mexico City and raised in Guanajuato, Mexico. I love to teach at Dublin High. I enjoy traveling, reading, walking, surfing the web and trying foods from all parts of the world.
Education
I attended elementary and high school in Mexico. In 2002, I attended San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, CA, and later transferred to the University of the Pacific where I graduated with a B.A. in Modern Languages with a focus on Spanish, and obtained a Single Subject Teaching Credential . In 2017, I joined the College Board as a Spanish AP Reader and I work for this organization grading AP tests every year. I have learned how to assess students' work at a fast speed according to the AP grading guidelines and how to better prepare students to successfully pass the AP Exam.
Teaching
Many people have asked me how I was able to learn English in such short period of time. The most valuable factor was immersion. Immersion is a key for language success! I completely submerged in the English Language. I talked to people in English, read magazines, listened to music, radio, watch T.V., movies... I used the language everyday even though I had access to all of these in Spanish. I gave up some of my favorite T.V. shows and radio stations so I could listen to others in English. Using English on a regular basis in a variety of forms made me learn it fast. Language is like a sport. You need to practice it everyday in order to be successful.
As a teacher, I understand students' joys and frustrations when learning another language. I am an English Learner. I know what it takes to learn another language. For this reason, I constantly work on presenting material to students in a variety of forms, specially difficult grammar concepts. I use language immersion, TPR, paralinguistic cues, comprehensible input, tea variety of technology tools and other strategies to support students' learning. I always provide my students with multiple opportunities to engage them to use the target language. My main goal is that students learn the Spanish language for communication inside class and outside the classroom.
Being able to speak in other languages makes us not only more employable but more aware of our diverse and global society. I hope to count on your support to make learning a fun, meaningful and productive experience.
